English cricket stars Andrew Flintoff and Kevin Pietersen have joined the Indian Premier League (IPL) and will debut as its highest paid players after each were sold at auction for $1.55 million ($A2.37m).

Flintoff and Pietersen will receive only half of their money as they are only available for the first three weeks of the six week Twenty20 tournament. Tournament rules stipulate that payments are made on a pro-rata basis for matches played. Still not a bad salary for a few games of cricket.

Pietersen will join the Bangalore Royal Challengers, while Flintoff is off to play with the Chennai Super Kings.

Indian captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni, was the previous record holder being purchased by the Chennai Super Kings for $1.5 million ($A2.3 million) last year.

Some of the other top prices paid (USD):

  1. Mahendra Singh Dhoni - $1.5 million
  2. Andrew Symonds - $1.35 million
  3. Ishant Sharma - $950,000
  4. Manoj Tiwary - $675,000
  5. Shane Warne - $450,000
  6. Ricky Ponting - $400,000
  7. Matthew Hayden - $375,000
  8. Shivnarine Chanderpaul - $200,000

The Twenty20 tournament will be played during April and May this year throughout several cities in India.
