The latest star Bomber to go down with an injury is midfielder Andrew Welsh. Coming of his best season to date Welsh broke the fibula bone in his right leg and dislocated his right ankle in a tackle laid by 19-year-old Irish recruit Michael Quinn during the third quarter of Essendon’s intraclub match at Whitten Oval.
Welsh was operated on last night and Football operations manager, Paul Hamilton, said the procedure was a success. “Last night the doctors pinned the bone in his leg and also put his ankle back in place,” Hamilton said.
Welsh joins a star studded list of injured Bombers including: Brent Stanton (quad), Alwyn Davey (knee reconstruction), Michael Hurley (gall bladder) and Jason Laycock (foot stress fractures).
Key Bombers close to full fitness Matthew Lloyd (hamstring), David Hille (shin) and Mark McVeigh (toe) did play in the intraclub match however will likely sit out the opening NAB Cup round against the Bulldogs in Darwin.
The Bombers are in a rebuilding phase with up and coming youngsters including Tom German and Kade Klemke called in to fill the gaps of the injured senior players.
Welsh’s injury is quite nasty according to Dr Peter Larkins who believes he will be out for up to 4 months.
