Love them or hate them, the Collingwood cheer squad is a well oiled and dedicated machine. But it seems that machine is losing a few cogs.

More than 50 members of its cheer squad will not be required for the start of the 2009 AFL season. Wanting to avoid the heartache 70 did not bother reapplying, more than halving last year’s 220 strong group.
Before Collingwood supporters get too depressed, cheer up as the spiritual leader of the clan, bearing the golden jacket and only a few teeth, Jeff “Joffa” Corfe will be back.
Magpies director of membership Justin Reeves said 120 members of last year’s cheer squad have gone, replaced by fresh blood and more than 50 who applied to continue were rejected.
The Pies want to ensure that everyone who is part of the squad earns their place through a deep desire to be involved and support the club. “Quite a few people in it for the wrong reasons didn’t reapply,” Mr Reeves said.
So if you don’t particularly like Collingwood or their cheer squad, there will be 120 less of them to deal with this year.
